Burning Borders: Yesterday's Gone 01.09.09 CD Reviews by Kristian Partington

By: Kristian Partington

The sheer breadth of the talent coming out of the Canadian Rock scene is nothing short of phenomenal and with the release of its second album, Yesterday’s Gone, Burning Borders is poised to ride this wave for some time to come.

The story of this Vancouver-based five-piece is the typical one: formed in a basement in the suburbs of a large urban centre, a group of young, talented musicians worked tirelessly to melt their inspirations with their desires to create something unique. As many musicians with a garage band-filled resume can attest, making music is one thing. Honing a new sound and bringing it to the attention of music fans who share a common love of musical evolution is something else entirely.

It takes a serious amount of dedication and the right stars must align at just the right time. For Burning Borders, three years of perseverance paid off when the buzz surrounding the band came to the doorstep of Thorny Bleeder Records in 2008. This new entity from Vancouver had caught hold of the right mix of heavy guitars, bass riffs, thrashing drums and blended that mix with a singer who can croon and scream with equal ease; label support was inevitable.

The result is a hard rock tribute to the constant growth of the Canadian music scene. The force behind Burning Borders is now coming to light and as "Yesterday’s Gone" spreads to rock fans in Canada and beyond, it’s likely that musical borders and barricades that may once have stood before these guys will continually be torn apart.
