CHILDISH GAMBINO: IT’S ON FOR HIM!

Earlier this year, rap sensation Childish Gambino, also known as Donald Glover, rescheduled his concert date of March 25th at Montréal for the August 1st due to an injury. Wednesday night, we were witnesses that hip hop still has a beating heart with a brillant performance at the Metropolis by this multidisciplinary guy (comedian, producer, etc.) The show began and never stopped during 75 quality minutes including the encore. The crowd was hyped up for the first song “Outside” followed by a dope version of “Firefly”. The giant screen behind the stage was a must. As exemple during “Freaks and Geeks”, the last word of every poetry lines was displayed. We can’t deny that hip hop performers combined with real musicians are more exciting to watch then a simple DJ or scratcher guy. Also, one guitarist played violins during some songs. Adele’s hit “Rolling in The Deep” was taken over by Gambino for an interesting remix. Both guitarists hit on a drum instead during that one. “L.E.S” (Lower East Side) featured a video of meeting someone in a bar of that part of Manhattan, NY. Funny reality geek clip.

The four last songs of the set included completed songs “Heartbeat” and “You See Me”. “Bonfire” was the highlight of the night. A simple reminder here, we would rather take “Bonfire” instead of “Sunrise” to close the set. It’s more an appropriate and explosive track.

The encore contained two freestyles and a special guest named Steve G. Lover. These last songs were “One Up” and “Lights Turned On”.

Childish Gambino has an eighteen track new album, called “Royalty”, on the market since one month. Personnally, it was one of the best rap concerts I have ever seen. Regardless, the Metropolis wasn’t sold out. According to all these rumors, he is absolutely not a relative or the son of the famous actor Danny Glover who was Mel Gibson’s partner in the classic movies Lethal Weapon.

Opening act was Chicago’s own Chance the Rapper. He was a bit upset by the weak interaction of the Montreal crowd when he played. He left very quickly at the end with no thanks. Correct but he needs to know that Rome wasn’t built in a day. He has really potential. Highly recommanded for anyone who like any forms of hip hop!
